Why Off Grid Solar is Better Than Ever
With the emergence of high quality used battery packs from automotive companies like Tesla, building your own high performance solar system has never been easier.
Let me explain, most people think that solar systems can only power a handful of items like a fridge, lights or a computer. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
Even with a small off grid solar system, you can easily run a small A/C unit, electric tank water heater, washing machine, electric cooking appliances (like an Instant Pot, electric griddle, toaster, air fryer) all without breaking a sweat.
Solar systems of the past use heavy, space consuming AGM or golf cart style batteries. They require ongoing maintenance, have a low discharge capacity, need to be replaced much more often and are ridiculously heavy. To put it simply, lead-acid batteries are ancient and have been replaced by Lithium-Ion batteries.
The goal of this guide, even for those of you that don’t intend on DIYing your solar system step-by-step, is to show you how simple, affordable, and relatively maintenance-free modern off-grid solar can be.
In our case study project, I was able to design a high quality 5kW solar system with nearly 20kWh of capacity at $3/watt. A local solar contractor is going to have a difficult time coming anywhere close to that price if including battery storage.

Nearly everything was purchased from an online solar store, eBay, Home Depot or Lowes. I tried to use widely available components and materials so that it would be easier to replicate.
I’ve included a number of places where you can purchase all of the major components like the panels, charge controller, inverter and batteries.
I even went one step further and included all product links and prices to nearly every little piece of wire that was used in our case study.
Solar system prices can vary based on a number of different factors such as location, roof mount vs ground mount, quality of components and panels.
Our case study system came in at a low price of $3/watt which includes Lithium-Ion battery storage, high quality LG solar panels and our panels were ground mounted (more expensive than roof mount).
It took about 6 days for our case study system to be installed. It could’ve been done quicker though.
Installing a solar system isn’t a huge ordeal compared to other building projects.
